The medical director for an ultrasound service provider
in Houston has designed a system he is using for secure
collaboration and record keeping over the Internet. The
system, which uses an Internet file sharing service from
Mangosoft Inc., Westborough, Mass., compresses the turnaround
for ultrasound images from five days to 90 minutes.
Randall Stenoien MD of Sound Choices devised the
system "to improve the way we deliver our services," he
said. Mangosoft's Mangomind solution "dramatically
streamlines the entire process, and allows our referring
physicians to provide better care for their patients."
Using the system, Stenoien can post MPEG videos of
ultrasound tests in near-real time, allowing remote interpreting
radiologists to provide feedback, such as requesting
additional views - preventing the delay, cost and extra hassle
associated with requiring patients to return for additional
imaging.
Stenoien configured personal computers at obstetricians'
offices with Mangomind and a video capture system
to transfer ultrasound images to their PCs, and then to save
them on the Mangomind drive, hosted at the Exodus data
center in Waltham, Mass. Radiologists can access the images
on that drive, and post written reports there as well.
Mangomind provides 128-bit encryption during transfer
and storage of the files. The vendor also provides user
authentication and Windows NT-type permissions and access
restrictions. Mangomind was designed to seamlessly
integrate with Windows-based file sharing systems.
