Mango Introduces a New Way to Network
Mango's Medley Enters Beta Testing for August Release
New York, NY - June 17, 1997: Today at PC Expo, MangoSoft
Corporation (Mango) announced an entirely new way to network computers
using its revolutionary CacheLink Networking technology. This breakthrough
software solution, created with original Mango technology, delivers a
totally adaptive, fault-tolerant and completely transparent network. The
new CacheLink Networking architecture dramatically exceeds the
functionality, flexibility and performance of existing client/server and
peer-to-peer networking solutions.
Utilizing three of today's most pervasive industry standards, Microsoft
Windows, TCP/IP and Ethernet, CacheLink Networking has the unique ability
to seamlessly tap the storage and memory resources of all the PCs on the
network. The CacheLink architecture sets a new standard in networking
where all the attached PCs work as both a client and a server. By
harnessing these idle PC resources, Mango's networking solution creates a
cooperative, optimum performance environment.
Mango's First CacheLink Network Solution: Medley
Mango's debut product utilizing CacheLink Networking technology is
Medley - a networking solution for the more than 150 million small
business PCs that are not currently networked. The initial version of
Medley, which will be available in August 1997, is designed for companies
who want to network up to 25 PCs operating with Windows 95 and/or Windows
NT.
When configuring a Medley network, every PC contributes a portion of
its hard drive to help create a Medley drive. For example, if ten users
contribute 250 megabytes, then the Medley volume will be 2.5 gigabytes in
size. Each machine will see the Medley drive as a local hard drive listed
with all the other drives under "My Computer," which means that
users do not need to learn networking and already know how to use Medley.
Because all of the machines in the network can access the Medley drive
like a traditional server, it is well suited for application and file
storage.
Medley delivers significant benefits to users, including:
* Easy to Set Up: You do not need to know anything about networking to set up or use
a Medley network. The entire network configuration - including IP
addressing, driver and network stack installation, and more - is
completely automatic.
* Cost Effective: Medley allows PCs to share resources - both storage and memory - so
when a new computer is added to the network, everyone benefits. . .
all without the need of a network administrator.
* Efficient: Medley provides the power of a traditional network without the
complexity, so users are able to easily exploit the benefits of
sharing information. And because idle storage resources are being
utilized, users also benefit from peak network performance.
* Fault-Tolerant and Self-Healing: Every file on the Medley drive is transparently stored in at least
two places to ensure availability in the event of any machine failure.
Thus, making all the networked data accessible by the machines
remaining in the network during such a failure. Following a machine outage, all data from the down machine
regenerates across the network - restoring the network to a
fault-tolerant state within minutes.
* Adaptive: Medley automatically stores files on the PCs where they are used to
increase performance and reduce network traffic. As usage patterns and
available resources change, the Medley network automatically adjusts
to meet end user needs.
"Medley is the first network that all WinTel users already know
how to use," said Steve Frank, president and CEO of Mango. "It's
a simple and affordable network solution that delivers power beyond
networks available at any price - Medley is a revolutionary new way to
network."
Medley Offers Dramatic Savings Over Traditional Solutions
Compared with traditional server-based solutions, the savings on
Mango's Medley are dramatic. A traditional 10-seat client/server network
can be almost four times more costly than a 10-seat Medley network - not
including the considerable expense of a network administrator.
Distribution
Mango will initially introduce Medley in August of 1997 through a wide
range of Value Added Resellers (VARs) and Original Equipment Manufacturers
(OEMs) in North America. A retail roll-out is slated for later in 1997,
followed by the delivery of Asian and European versions in the fourth
quarter.
"Because the network buying habits of a small business differ
vastly from those of a larger company, we needed a unique way to reach
this market - thus we developed a circular channel strategy,"
explains Rick Onyon, vice president of Sales and Marketing. "In this
strategy VARs, OEMs and retail outlets work together harmoniously, with
each channel feeding sales into the next."
