Mango Announces Medley99 - The Next Generation 'Server'
Why Buy a File Server? Create One by Clustering Your Existing PCs
Westborough, MA - May 24, 1999: Mango, developers of
breakthrough small business and enterprise solutions, today announced the
release of their new software product, Medley99. Medley99 features Mango's
second-generation Pooling Engine and Cache management with NT server
class performance. Mango's new software product enables the creation of a
"virtual file server" using idle capacity on existing PCs. As
each PC is added to the "Pool", files are instantly
available, solving data migration problems. Medley99 combines advanced
security, all standard file server features, and innovative clustering
technology that provides superior fault tolerance.
Medley's strengths are best stated by Medley customers:
"About two months ago I had a system crash on me. We had to
replace the Hard Drive. Everything was lost. When we put the network back
on, all the info I had was still there. It was like Medley stored it in
mid-air and put it back when the system came back on line." Loran
Cheely PC Computers Plus.
Russell Bozian, consultant for the Cincinnati Association for the Deaf,
says that the number one thing that impresses him about Medley is
"that with any other file server system you are constantly worried
about touching the server, you can't pull out cards or do anything that
might mess up the system. With Medley I can walk around and fiddle with
each machine whenever I want and the file system is always there."
Russell claims that "once you use this file system all others seem
like a toy".
"Medley99 is an incredible value for the small office that needs
file sharing but does not want to perform complicated and time-consuming
administration associated with network server solutions," says
Mango's Vice President of Marketing and Sales, Eric Walton. "We know
that 60% of all servers are purchased just as file servers, and Medley99
goes beyond simple file sharing, since it provides better performance than
a traditional network file server because of its unique caching of
data."
Walton also adds, "The very best way to reach the small business
market is through the Value Added Reseller (VAR) channel and, therefore,
Mango has decided to sell Medley99 exclusively through the VAR
channel."
Medley99 makes a shared file server as easy to use as your local C
drive, but has some of the advanced file features only available on more
expensive systems. This includes fault tolerance similar to a clustered
server and advanced performance features based on Mango's breakthrough
caching techniques that migrate data according to usage. According to
Mango's Vice President and Chief Technology Officer, Scott Davis,
"Mango's Pooling Technology represents a breakthrough in cluster
storage paradigms. It is a new hybrid model that incorporates the best
attributes of the Shared Everything and the Shared Nothing cluster
architectures, yielding superb load-balancing characteristics. Mango has
uniquely applied enterprise clustering technology to meet the needs of the
small business market."
Medley also smoothes the introduction of new PCs into workgroups. As a
PC is added to the Medley "Pool", all the appropriate company
data on the Medley drive simply appears to the new PC instantly, as
another local drive. Since Medley uses existing idle capacity on PCs, the
Medley virtual server grows as you add users, unlike a traditional file
server.
Medley99 is shipping now exclusively through the VAR channel! VARs who
are interested in distributing Medley99 should register at www.mangosoft.com
on the Reseller page where they can obtain a trial version and details
about Mango's VAR program. Medley99 supports Windows 95 and Windows 98
platforms, and requires 32MB of RAM and a pentium-class processor. It is
designed for small businesses and organizations, as well as workgroups.

Mango introduced Pooling, Mango's unique and innovative clustered
caching software, with its first product Medley97. Medley99 includes
Mango's vastly improved second generation pooling engine, which has led to
significant performance and quality improvements. The Medley product
provides an intuitive file system for the small business market and makes
the networking of PCs simple and substantially more cost-effective than
any other available alternative. Medley has won PC Week's Best of Comdex
award for Connectivity Solutions. Technology pundit and Ethernet inventor
Bob Metcalfe calls Pooling "the biggest idea we've seen since network
computers." Mango has filed for eight patents on its Pooling
technology and Mango's highly experienced engineering team is continuing
to enhance this core technology and broaden its application. According to
Davis, "Mango is already applying clustered caching to Web Caching
and other Internet applications."
