About This Readme
=================
This readme contains an overview of Cachelink, its features and
benefits, details about what is new in this version of Cachelink,
and information about any installation-related issues.
Once Cachelink is installed, you will find several other
readme-style files in the Cachelink installation directory
that contain information you may find useful.
The Cachelink Release Notes describes known issues
related to Cachelink operations.
Using the standard installation procedure, Cachelink can be
installed quickly and easily (less than two minutes per
computer). Cachelink Network Installation is a process for
installing Cachelink from a network share that provides
centralized management of Cachelink licenses and ensures
consistency in Cachelink settings during installation.
If you are seeking information on network installation of
Cachelink, see the Cachelink User's Guide (Download PDF Viewer).
This document includes a description of how to set up a
network install for Cachelink.
Cachelink Overview
==================
Cachelink software runs on each PC, combining individual browser
caches on your LAN into a highly efficient, LAN-wide Web-cache
without the need for any additional hardware. Web pages accessed
by one Cachelink user are instantly available to other Cachelink
users.
With Cachelink, you spend less time waiting for the Web. By
saving time, Cachelink saves you money. Cachelink also uses less
Internet bandwidth, so that more is available for other
applications and users. Cachelink leverages your LAN to provide
ultra-fast Internet access.
Cachelink works with new or existing networks of Windows 95,
Windows 98, Windows ME, Windows NT, and Windows 2000 computers.
Features and Benefits
=====================
Cachelink Provides Ultra-Fast Access to Commonly Viewed Web Pages
-----------------------------------------------------------------
- Great for High-Speed Connections
- Terrific for LAN-modems / modem pools
Cachelink retrieves commonly viewed Web pages from other
Cachelink users on your LAN instead of through the Internet!
Cachelink is Secure and Private
-------------------------------
Cachelink combines your browser caches securely to maintain your
privacy. Content that you browse is stored only on your PC.
Cachelink is an anonymous cache - it respects your privacy and
does not provide tools to monitor user activity.
Furthermore, Cachelink does not cache secure connections (HTTPS),
so it doesn't compromise personal data sent over secure
connections.
Cachelink is Easy to Install and Use
------------------------------------
Cachelink can be installed by anyone quickly and requires no
additional hardware. Unlike proxy servers or Web-cache hardware,
there's no need to manually reconfigure complex browser
connection settings. The Cachelink software can automatically
configure several versions of the most popular browsers (Internet
Explorer and Netscape) to use Cachelink.
Cachelink is Fully Scalable
---------------------------
The more you share, the more you save. The more PCs running
Cachelink, the larger your shared Web cache, and the less
information you need to download from the Internet.
New in Cachelink Version 3.6
-----------------------------
New Browser Support - Cachelink now auto-configures Internet
Explorer version 6 and Netscape version 6.
Support for Proxy Automatic Configuration Script Files -
If your system accesses the Internet through a proxy
server that includes a proxy automatic configuration
script, Cachelink has the ability to use the proxy
auto-configuration scripts from your Internet browser.
These scripts can also be manually configured in the
Cachelink Configuration Utility.
Cachelink Installation Requirements
===================================
Cachelink requires that each computer on which you install it:
1) Have at least one properly working Web browser. If you are
using Internet Explorer, Mangosoft recommends you use version
4.x or higher.
2) Have one installed browser designated as the default browser.
3) Have each browser configured to access the Internet through
its LAN connection, not a dial-up connection. LAN connectivity
should be through a shared device. Examples include a T1 router,
DSL router, Modem router, Proxy Server, or Windows 98 SE's
Internet Connection Sharing (ICS).
4) Have a LAN adapter properly configured to use Microsoft
TCP/IP.
5) Be running one of the following operating systems: any
released version of Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows ME,
Windows NT, or Windows 2000.
Note that Cachelink is not designed for use in environments
where each computer accesses the Internet through its own modem.
Browser-Related Installation Issues
===================================
During installation, when Cachelink finds browsers that have
been installed and configured to browse the Internet, the
installation program automatically configures the most common
versions of Internet Explorer and Netscape to use
Cachelink.
If you do not have one of these browsers, you will
see a message appear indicating Cachelink could not find any
of these popular browsers, which include Netscape 4 and 6, and
Internet Explorer 4 and higher. The message then explains
that if you continue Cachelink installation, Cachelink will not
be able to automatically configure any of your browsers, and
that you can configure your browsers manually at a later time.
When this message appears, it usually indicates that you are
using browsers which cannot be automatically configured for use
with Cachelink. If this is the case on your system, continue
your installation (or restart it if you exited the setup
program), and once you have installed Cachelink you can
manually configure any browsers on your system using the
instructions in the Cachelink online help.
If you do have one of the configurable browsers on your
system, a message like this indicates that for some reason
Cachelink could not find your browser(s). You may want to
ensure that you have run any Internet wizards that came with
your browsers so the browser has been fully configured. If you
are using Netscape, you should ensure you have at least one
profile in the default location. If this does not resolve your
problem, you may want to try reinstalling your Web browser to
ensure it registers itself properly on your system, and then
Cachelink should be able to locate it. Cachelink checks for new
browsers when you restart your system. If for some reason,
Cachelink cannot properly detect your browser even after trying
the above, you can manually configure your browser to use
Cachelink using the simple instructions in the Cachelink online
help.
Network-Related Installation Issues
===================================
Cachelink requires each computer you install it on to have
a LAN adapter properly configured to use Microsoft's TCP/IP. If
there is a network problem detected during Cachelink
installation, Cachelink informs you of this by displaying an
error message, often accompanied by an error number. Cachelink
will require any network errors be resolved before it will
install. If you receive this type of error message, go to
Mangosoft's Support Web site (www.mangosoft.com/support)
for detailed information about your network error, and possible
solutions to your problem.
Other Installation Issues
=========================
If you have difficulty installing Cachelink, ensure that
other applications are not running on your system. You
should exit all other applications before running the
Cachelink setup program.
