Configuring Dial-Up Access To The Medley Drive

This document provides a short refresher on configuring dial-up access to the Medley drive.

Configuring Remote Access to the Pool
Should you wish to access your pool from a remote system over a phone line, you can configure one computer in the pool as a Microsoft Remote Access Dial-Up Server. Then you can configure the remote systems (clients) to dial into the dial-up server.

Requirements
To configure a computer as a dial-up server, the computer must have a modem and phone line. You can install the dial-up server on the same computer as the one sharing its modem with the pool (using Pooled Internet Access). However, only one function can use the phone line at a time. Should the dial-up server use the phone line, pool users will be unable to access the Internet. The reverse is also true.

To configure a Windows computer as a dial-up server:

  1. Make sure that your computer is configured to share files as follows:
    1. Click on the Start->Settings->Control Panel, then Network.
    2. Click the File and Print Sharing button.
3. Click the sharing options you want, then click OK. A check mark means the option is on. At a minimum, you need to enable the option that allows users to access files.
    4. Click OK to close the Network window.
    5. If prompted, you need to provide your operating system CD-ROM.
  2. Share the Medley drive itself or a folder within the Medley drive as follows:
    1. Using Windows Explorer or My Computer, open the Medley drive.
    2. Right click on the Medley drive itself, or the folder or file that you wish to share.
    3. In the pop-up menu, click Sharing.
    4. In the Properties dialog, click Shared As.
    5. Set the appropriate permissions and other options in this dialog. For additional information, click ? in the corner of the dialog.
    6. Close the dialog.
  3. From your desktop, open My Computer, then Dial-Up Networking.
  4. Select the Connections menu, then choose Dial-Up Server.
  5. In the Dial-Up Server dialog, select Allow Caller Access.
  6. Depending on your system configuration, you will see one of the following:
    • Change Password button - You can optionally use it to define a modem password for Dial-Up Networking clients.
    • User Name field - You can optionally use the Add and Remove buttons to determine which users can access the dial-up server.
  7. Click the Server Type button and select the server type. Typically, you should choose Default. The dial-up server will automatically start in PPP mode for incoming calls and switch to RAS for Windows for Workgroups mode if the PPP negotiation fails.
  8. Click OK to finish. The dial-up server is ready to answer incoming calls.

Tips

  • Changes to the server type do not apply to a connection that is currently open. Changes will apply to any future connections made to this computer.
  • To disconnect any users who are currently connected to this computer through Dial-Up Networking, open the Dial-Up Server dialog box, click the Disconnect User button.
  • You can set up multiple computers in the pool as Dial-up Servers.

To configure a Windows computer as a dial-up client:

  1. From your desktop, open My Computer, then Dial-Up Networking.
  2. Open Make New Connection.
  3. Follow the instructions in the dial-up wizard to create a connection to the Dial-Up Server.
  4. To connect to the server, double-click on the connection you created in the Dial-Up Networking window, then press the Connect button.
  5. After the connection occurs, you can use Network Neighborhood to browse the Medley drive shared folders that were set up on the dial-up server.
