Recommended Windows Stability Updates

Microsoft has provided updates to fix bugs in Windows 95.  MangoSoft recommends you install the following two of these updates before installing Medley99 on computers running Window 95.

Microsoft Kernel Update - krnlupd.exe

Microsoft says this update does the following:

This update provides a solution to the memory usage problem associated with using the LCMapStringA() API or the Sockets() API.

When repeatedly searching or sorting large databases in database applications like Microsoft Access or Microsoft Visual Basic, the system runs out of memory. System will notify user with an "Out of memory" message.

An "Out of memory" message may also be encountered after prolonged use of applications that repeatedly open and close TCP sockets.

The update is available from Microsoft or can be downloaded by clicking here.

Microsoft WinSock Update - wsockupd.exe

Microsoft says this update does the following:

When multiple network adapters are configured to use the Microsoft TCP/IP protocol (a configuration known as multi-homing), network names may not be resolved correctly using a Domain Name Service(DNS) server. Specific symptoms include:

  • When multiple DNS servers are configured on a single workstation with one DNS server for a Dial-Up Networking connection and another DNS server for a primary network adapter, the DNS server configured for the Dial-Up Networking connection is not used.
  • When you attempt to use multiple Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) servers to dynamically assign DNS server addresses to multiple network adapters installed in your computer, the DNS server addresses may not be assigned properly.

These problems may be encountered when you are using either 32-bit or 16-bit programs

The update is available from Microsoft or can be downloaded by clicking here.
